3.5.10 Beggars and Cheeseburgers Reading

Have you ever wanted to eat yummy crepes and listen to amazing poetry?? Then be jealous because that was my Friday night and it was delicious! Delightful Crepes in Long Beach has been a great friend to the Long Beach poetry community and tonight was no different as Beggars and Cheeseburgers held their debut issue reading. This fresh newspaper-mag features greats like Donna Hilbert, Joan Jobe Smith, Fred Voss, Eric Morago, G. Murray Thomas, Gerald Locklin, Edward Field, and so many more!!! And right along side these greats are fresh voices varying from students to housewives delivering a unique new mag dynamic with eclectic poetry, art, and photography. Poetry Editors, Jack Arambula and Andrew Hilbert, (yes, they are related, he calls her grandma), and Photography Editor, Elizabeth Jackson, have succeeded in making a mark on the populated lit mag scene. With such a diverse and memorable contribution to the art community, I look forward to reading their upcoming issues!

The reading itself was a brilliantly fun night filled with hippie poems, and poems about machinists, poetry traveling through heaven and hell, poems about art and love, and was even blessed with some dancing. To be among so many LA pioneers was a true honor as they reminisced of poetry days filled with Gin and old loves. Gerry never disappoints with some dancing (a successful Bell Step, not his last), and singing, (his new project: to master the moves of Lady GaGa, he gave us a little rendition of "Bad Romance"). And I would love to plug all of the new books forthcoming or just released for all of these poetry legends, but instead I will refer you to my friend Google. There are just too many to name, but they all have something coming out!!!

Make sure to check out Beggars and Cheeseburgers at www.beggarsandcheeseburgers.com for subscriptions and submissions.
